OverPopulation!
Problems of Overpopulation in India
In 2015 India's Population was a whopping 1.31 Billion.
Predictions shows in 2022 India will overtake China to become the world's most populous country.
That's just 3 years from now.
Earlier predictions cited the year 2028 for this to happen.
But India's population is growing so rapidly, that it will reach that mark in 6 years advance.
And it isn't a matter of pride.
Over Population leads to poverty, Unemployment leads to climate change, which pressurizes the natural resources like forests and Land leads to an increase in social and religious conflicts.
So overpopulation is regarded as the root cause of most of the problems in this part of the world.
The condition has really worsened and is visible everywhere like markets and public places.
If you want to get an idea of the situation just have a look at this Mumbai's local trains video.
In this video, I am going to discuss some possible solutions which can be used to tackle the problem of overpopulation.
Solutions for overpopulation in India
Whenever we are discussing solutions for overpopulation, China's one-child policy comes first mostly, in our minds. They think India Government too should follow china and Implement this policy to restrict,
the birth of more than one child. But most people don't know.
China's one-child policy was a failure.
Thirty years later in 2015, they ended this policy.
This policy leads to a huge gender imbalance and an increase in female feticide.
This happened because, like India, China to is traditionally a patriarchal society where people prefer at least one male child over a female child.
So when the government restricted the number of child to one, so people preferred to go for female feticide to have a male child, not a girl this led to a huge gender imbalance which made China a world's worst sex ratio country in 2004.
122 males is to 100 females.
This huge gap in the male-female population led to some ill practices BRIDE PRICE in which brides were bought in return of money.
So the one-child policy led to all these problems.
So we can conclude the one-child policy is not a good solution to fight overpopulation in the case of India.
forced sterilization too was suggested as a solution to counter overpopulation.
This thing, in fact, had already been tried in India. During the Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi in 1976.
When her son Sanjay Gandhi lead a forceful sterilization program. In which 10 million people were sterilized.
There were few incidents of forceful sterilization people were compelled to go and get sterilized.
But surprisingly!! even after sterilizing 10 million people.
There was no evident effect of this on population growth no noticeable change was observed!!
This shows forceful imposing of unplanned policies won't lead to a change.
And above all, it's very unethical to sterilize someone forcefully because reproduction is a very basic Human right.
No one should get to decide how many children a person can have, it's immoral and unethical, so forced sterilization cant be regarded as a solution in today's world.
Realistics Solution of Overpopulation
So it all melts down to this question, what can be the effective and realistic solutions against overpopulation?? and answer to this is a little boring and it is the investment in education and health care and to understand this we must know what fertility rate means. The fertility rate of a country is the average number of children a woman gives birth to in her lifetime if the fertility rate of a country is 2.
That means every woman in that country gives birth to 2 children on an average, which means
the number of people dying is equal to number of children born.
This makes the population stable, this is why 2 fertility rate is called REPLACEMENT fertility "theoretically " but in reality, many children die during the birth itself so realistically.
The replacement fertility rate is taken as 2.2 and if any country's population is near about this replacement fertility rate then in future it will remain stable so to end overpopulation we must aim
to maintain the fertility rate of the country close to 2.2.
And why I am saying that education is the only solution to fight against overpopulation because fertility rate and literacy rate, both are surprisingly interdependent.
Higher the literacy rate lower the fertility rate this pattern is observed in many places of the world over.
As well as Indian states, for instance, Kerala the state with highest literacy rate in India nearly 100% literacy rate has a very low fertility rate.
You can see in these two charts how fertility rates literacy rates are correlated in each state of India.
You can see Madhya Pradesh Rajasthan Uttar Pradesh in the center literacy rates are very low
and evidently, the fertility rate is very high!!!
In fact, very few states of India have fertility rates above 2.2 in whole India those are Rajasthan Madhya Pradesh Uttar Pradesh and Bihar and because of this states India's population is Increasing
because the rest of all the other states have come down below this replacement fertility rate.
So as an individual the easiest thing one can do is-
To vote those political parties which are serious about Public Education the governments of the states of Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, and Tripura.
Have increased the Budget for Education by a good amount.
Unfortunately our Central govt and many other state governments. Don't seem interested in giving Education any priority.
The share of Education was 4.57 % of the total budget During 2013's congress govt.
It gradually fell down in 2014, 15, 16 to become 3.65% in 2017.
This shows this govt is giving the least priority to Education. and is siphoning out the money from its budget to put it somewhere else.
The root cause of all the problems which is overpopulation nothing is being done to fight it.
on the other hand, money is being wasted on statues Advertisements in the name of cow protection and what no one seems interested in improving literacy rate.
conditions are worst in the states of MP, UP, Bihar, Rajasthan which are critical states for the population's point of view. The politicians over there are promoting overpopulation.
A few of them suggest having at least 4 kids.
The education minister of Rajasthan who is responsible for the right Education of the people is endorsing myths and superstitions like Cow inhales Carbon-di-Oxide and Exhales Oxygen.
Therefore It is really important for these states to especially focus on Education. And to vote those people who focus on this.
Friends, I hope this article was of help to all of you and you got to learn something out of it.
