Now, normally I do not make articles on such "juicy" topics. But here, I observe some deep social issues in our society, which I feel it is necessary to talk about.

Obviously, it is a person's personal choice about which platform he likes better. But in my opinion, YouTube is clearly a better platform. And there are three major reasons why I do not like TikTok
Attention Span in TikTok

But TikTok takes this to another extreme level. It takes only around 10-15 seconds to watch one TikTok video. Think about it- our attention spans have become so short that we need something new to entertain ourselves every 10 seconds.
The patience level of the people has fallen so low, that when you go to a cinema hall to watch a movie, and if there's a boring scene then some people take out their phones and start to browse even there. They do not have enough patience to watch even a two-hour video without handling their phones. They need something entertaining every second.
Now, several problems arise due to such a short attention span.
First of all- you cannot teach anything new in such a short amount of time.
I try that you get to learn something new or that you imbibe some new information in every article I make and that you gain some knowledge. But, this is not possible to do on TikTok in 10-15 seconds

Secondly, it becomes impossible to concentrate or focus on anything with such a short attention span where more concentration/ focus is required.

And in general, you do not achieve any long term fulfillment/ benefit by doing this. You could waste hours on TikTok but after that, you will not get any feeling of achievement or gratification.

TikTok is Passive and Addictive
The second reason is that TikTok is completely passive and extremely addicting.Passive in the sense that you do not do a lot of actions on your own on the app. The app does its own actions and presents contents before you.
You can at least search on YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram. You have to scroll yourself or search for content sometimes. But TikTok completely eliminates this method. And there is just one feed that its algorithm has generated for you and it keeps displaying content and you keep watching new stimuli like a mindless robot and then next.. next... next.
Now you could ask what the problem with it being passive is?
The problem is that when something is so passive that there is almost negligible action from a person,
it becomes even more addicting.
TikTok, in comparison with the rest of the social media networks, is much more addicting because you do not have to do anything there. The app displays a new video for you every 15 seconds and the most you have to do is scroll in a direction as compared to YouTube, where you get different options after watching a video and you have to choose what you want to watch by clicking on it. So, you will have to exercise some thinking there.
But your mind is completely switched off on TikTok
On YouTube, you at least have to think and decide whether to click on something or not and whether you have an interest in a particular topic or not. You make a decision here.
So this(TikTok) becomes even more addicting.
To show how addicting they are, a lot of people compare social media to drugs.
Here, I would compare TikTok to a casino slot machine These are slot machines in casinos where you have to click once and three numbers appear simultaneously. You either win or you don't.
TikTok is kind of the same You scroll once and you either find it entertaining or not. If not, then you scroll again for the next.
If yes, then you become happy momentarily, and then you scroll again for more such momentary happiness.
So slot machines work the same way and the people that are addicted to gambling in casinos the same happens with them too. They keep pressing the slot machines again and again with hopes of winning something each time.
In my opinion, the same situation happens in TikTok too.
Chinese Influencer on TikTok
And the third reason is political for me.TikTok is an app made by a Chinese company and we know that all Chinese companies dance to the tunes of the Chinese government.
I consider the Chinese government to be a dictatorship. The Chinese government cannot tolerate any kind of criticism against it. So if anything worthy of criticism is put up on Chinese platforms then the pressure would be mounted on by the Chinese government to remove it.
And such cases have happened in the past where people put up TikTok videos criticizing the Chinese government or events in China and they were expunged.
Although TikTok did apologize for it later but I would still not trust any Chinese company because we do not know the kind of influence the Chinese government has exerted upon these companies and to what extent would Chinese platforms go to in order to expunge or manipulate content and to further the interest of the Chinese government.
In comparison, fortunately, other social media platforms like YouTube and Facebook are based in the US. They are based in a western country with a liberal democracy where freedom of speech is protected according to clearly defined rules.
So you'd definitely observe more freedom of speech on YouTube as compared to TikTok.
Positives of TikTok
So these are the reasons why I do not personally like TikTok but at the same time, I'd like to acknowledge certain positive points of TikTok which cannot be denied.
For example, the entry barrier of TikTok is very low. It is extremely easy to make videos on TikTok.
All you need to do is pick up your phone and make videos. You just need to be slightly creative.

Now compare it to YouTube.
Many times, huge equipments are required to make videos on YouTube. You can begin recording videos on smartphones but if you want to grow and become a big YouTube channel, then eventually, you will have to upgrade your equipment.
You'd need lights as well as a good video editor which is quite a time intensive. It takes a lot of time to make a YouTube channel and even a YouTube video.
None of it is required in TikTok. All you need to do is pick up your phone and get set go.
And this is the reason why I feel that social media platforms like YouTube are biased towards middle class and upper-middle-class people in India who can already afford to set aside some time and money to make YouTube videos.
The lower class people who run their lives on daily earnings do not have either money or time to make YouTube videos.
But TikTok appeals more to the lower section of the society and the people living in rural India.
Because it is very easy to make TikTok videos. In one or two hours of their free time, they can become creative and make videos on TikTok.
And this is why, unfortunately, some people use casteist and classist language to roast TikTokers like

There is a very popular advertisement on YouTube This advertisement is named "Run like a girl"
It is a very interesting add.
Basically, people are interviewed and they are asked to run like a girl So the adults in the video run in an awkward manner to show how the girls run.
The same question is then posed to young girls in the video They're asked to run like a girl
And these girls then run swiftly with full power.

It is a very interesting video. It shows the perception of society with regard to what it is to run like a girl. When we say that someone runs like a girl or stands like a girl. It denotes a negative stereotype.
You could ask what's wrong with a negative stereotype is?
Girls on average are naturally weaker than men. They do not run as fast as men.
I'll explain what's wrong with the help of an example
Imagine you have a son and a daughter. Your son runs slowly and you tell him to run faster instead of running like a girl. Meanwhile, your daughter stands and listens.
What perception will be formed in the mind of your daughter? that running like a girl means running slowly that running like a girl means running in a weak manner and she'd assume that since she is a girl, she would run slowly.
This makes a difference in her self confidence.
A limit would be created in the mind of your own daughter which might fester life long. That she had heard that girls are a certain way and cannot do certain things in her childhood. So all her life she'd feel incapable to do things because such is the stereotype.
The same situation arises in Carryminati's video in certain timestamps.
In some places, Carryminati has made use of homophobic words subtly which sounds like an abuse
Words like "chakka" and "gay" have been used like abuses. Although carryminati has directly referred to the TikToker but it exerts a negative impact on the audience, third person, and society at large.
Just like I had given the girl-boy example You're talking to your son but it is exerting a negative influence on your daughter who is listening to this.
Similarly, the millions of fans of Carryminati may make use of these words as abuses. That "chukka" and "gay" are abusive words. And this negatively impacts the transgender society who are already fighting for their rights for years.
They've been fighting with extreme difficulty to change these stereotypes so that these words are no longer used as abuses
So in my opinion, it would be better if Carryminati and his fans introspect about the kind of words they use and whether or not these words have a negative impact on society? This is my opinion, but what do you think?
